The Buckeye Region Anti-Violence Organization (BRAVO) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2018 BRAVO Community Service Awards. Each year BRAVO honors individuals and organizations that have gone above and beyond in their service, dedication and work within and on behalf of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex (LGBTQI) communities. BRAVO acknowledges those who lead the way, and those whose work goes on behind the scenes, often unnoticed and under-appreciated. The selection of the award recipients this year certainly holds to that tradition.

Throughout his career in media, and especially his work with Outlook Magazine, and now with PRIZM, Bob Vitale has used his expertise to engage the public and raise awareness within and on behalf of the LGBTQ community. When our community needs a voice, he is there to help educate us and advocate for us. Bob has always been supportive of BRAVO and has amplified the message of safety and awareness when we need it most. BRAVO is honored to award Bob Vitale our BRAVO Spotlight Award, acknowledging his exemplary talent and service.

As a statewide organization, it is essential that BRAVO forge strong partnerships throughout Ohio in order to provide vital services to those who have experienced violence. BRAVO can count on the support and partnership of the LGBTQ Community Center of Greater Cleveland, and its Executive Director, Phyllis Harris. Phyllis has always been there to answer the call for BRAVO, and we thank her for her leadership and insight, which has been instrumental as we worked to provide assistance and support to the LGBTQ community is Northwestern Ohio. BRAVO is delighted to award Phyllis our Community Service Award for her dedication and commitment to safety for all.

As a leader and role model, C. Raphael Davis Williams, Esq. has been an excellent example of someone committed to making a difference. As Deputy General Counsel for the ACLU of Ohio and member of their Executive and Nominating Committees, in addition to his service as Cooperating Attorney for the Central Ohio Fair Housing Association, Raphael demonstrated his passion for justice and equality. Though his work as the immediate past President of the Board of Directors for Kaleidoscope, he was instrumental in the continued partnership between BRAVO and Kaleidoscope to ensure and increase access to services and programs for LGBTQ youth and families across Ohio. BRAVO continues to be grateful for Raphael’s counsel and insight, which has been helpful as we move BRAVO’s mission forward. We are very pleased to honor Raphael with our Community service award.

For many years, Club Diversity has been a great friend to BRAVO. As a gathering place where everyone is welcome, the owners and staff at Club Diversity have been incredibly supportive. They have given us a space to have events and fundraisers, and supplied BRAVO’s board with a place to meet for monthly meetings. They also prominently display our literature and other information so our community can stay informed. For their long-time support, BRAVO is proud to award the owners, Davina Lapczynski, Adam Ferrell and Calvin Gruszecki, as well as Richard Green, who has always made us feel welcome, our Community Service Award.

Laura Frizzell has been a helpline volunteer with BRAVO for many years. She has responded to several acute crisis incidents during helpline shifts, and in all instances, Laura responds with compassion, professionalism, and a survivor centric focus. Additionally, Laura is an excellent team player, always picking up extra shifts when needed. That willingness to lend a hand does not go unnoticed. BRAVO is thrilled to award Laura our Volunteer of the Year Award for her outstanding service and continued dedication to survivors of violence in the LGBTQI communities.

The 2018 BRAVO Community Service Awards will be presented at the annual BRAVO signature event Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner 2018 on Saturday May 19, 2018. The awards presentation will take place at the opening cocktail reception at 5:30 PM at the Renaissance Hotel, 50 N. 3rd Street, Columbus, OH 43215.
